Attitude Toward Enemies
What should be our attitude towards our enemies? We should bless, forgive, and love them, treat them well, and pray for them.
Why should we bless an evil person if he is under God’s curse? Because we have been forgiven. Love is seeking God’s blessing for a person — seeking their best. The wicked should be judged, but that is for God to do, not us (“vengeance is mine”) — unless he uses us as an agent (example: Israelites in Canaan, or civil magistrate). It makes me think of the Count of Monte Cristo. He took it upon himself to see that his enemies received justice for all the ways they had injured him. He ended up by making himself miserable.
God is able to hate with a true and holy hatred that we are not capable of. But we are to forgive.
